What is a fibroadenoma?
A fibroadenoma is a benign breast tumour made up of glandular and fibrous tissue.
It is particularly common in younger women.
It may occur in one or both breasts.
Typical features
Smooth breast lump
Firm or rubbery feel
Well-defined margins
Often mobile within the breast
Usually painless
Changes over time
Some fibroadenomas remain stable.
Some may increase in size.
Others may become smaller over time.
Hormonal changes can influence their size.
Diagnosis
A new breast lump should be properly evaluated because not every breast lump is a fibroadenoma. Depending on age and clinical findings, assessment may include:
Clinical breast examination
Ultrasound
Mammography when appropriate
Needle biopsy in selected cases
Seek medical evaluation for
Any new breast lump
Rapidly growing lump
Persistent breast pain
Nipple discharge
Skin changes
Nipple inversion
Change in breast shape or appearance
